Classification Speech
Mar. 26, 2018 6:00 p.m.
Anthony was born and raised in Belleville and attended Nicholson Catholic College before graduating from the University of Ottawa with a degree in Geography and Political Science. He went on to further his studies in Geographic Information Systems, pursuing a Graduate Certificate from Algonquin College’s prominent GIS program. After working various contracts for the Federal Government, he grew bored with the mundane 9-5 of government life and took a role directly in the Commercial Insurance Industry back home in Belleville. That was where he found his passion; helping business owners both large and small find the proper insurance they need. Anthony works for and represents you, the business owner. His sectors of expertise include transportation, construction, landscaper’s and contractors of all types and sizes. In his spare time Anthony enjoys Hockey, Baseball and Golf. He is also active in many local clubs including the Belleville Chamber of Commerce, Trenton Rotary Club and Men’s Sales and Ad among many others. |

Kristin Crowe from Belleville Rotary will be speaking to us about Camp Merrywood. Easter Seals Camp Merrywood is located in the Smith Falls and Perth area. The camp was built in 1948 and began as a program for children with polio. The facilities and programs have evolved over the years, now hosting summer camp for children with disabilities. You can learn a bit more about the Camp itself here http://www.eastersealscamps.org/about/camp-merrywood It's truly quite an amazing place! The Belleville Club has been involved with the Camp for over 30 years. They take a group of volunteers every Spring, the weekend prior to Mother's Day weekend, and complete various projects to help prepare the property for the camping season. They split and stack wood for camp fires, rake leaves and clean out gardens, paint ~ sometimes cabins, sometimes things like picnic tables and they also do some special construction type projects as required such as replace windows in cabins, flooring, electrical and plumbing ~ these projects are assigned to our skilled trades. The Belleville Rotary Club budgets approximately $10k each year to help supply materials for special projects.

We have had a very successful Early Act Program this year. Come to the meeting to hear all about it! We will be welcoming students from the program at our meeting to speak about their experience. EarlyAct is a program for intermediate & Senior Elementary School Children, following the principles of a service club.
It is conducted during school time but at times other than classroom time. Our Club meets at their lunch time on a weekly basis, usually in the gym within the school.
The Club is managed by 2 teachers who act as resource persons to the Club for the purposes of following school rules, safely, discipline and to offer advice and direction (when needed).
The membership is made up of students from Grade 3 through 8 & is gender neutral. The current President is a girl by the name of Alexandra Dewar (grade 5 I think).
The meetings are very "hands on" in nature and the yearly program usually consists of 3 projects - 1 for the betterment of the School (raising money for sports equipment, sweat equity clean up or trash bash day, etc; 1 project for the betterment of the community such as raising funds/food for the local food bank, financial support to the Humane Society, etc; and 1 project on an International nature such as their current project of raising funds for the Rotary Polio Plus campaign, raising funds to support a school in a country in Africa, etc.
The Club usually follows some Rotary Club protocol in their meetings - such as calling the meeting to order by striking their meeting bell with their gavel, repeating the Rotary 4 way test, instead of dedicating "happy bucks", they ask each member to speak to a "happy" thought for the day.
Once their projects are researched for acceptance and proper execution, they organize themselves into small committees to work towards the successful realization of the project at hand.
Throughout their 5 year history, there has not been 1 project that they have agreed to, that has not met with resounding success.
Our "service above self" motto is alive and well through our sponsorship of this organization and although they do not have formal Rotary International sanction, this organization knows how to serve and is where our future Rotarians will come from .
In addition, David Lyon of Creating Possibilities will be giving a 5 minute presentation/announcement about his efforts in Napal. |

QuinteSailability, What's New
Jul. 16, 2018 6:00 p.m.
Quinte SailAbility is a sailing school for persons with a physical or developmental disability, regardless of age or degree of disability. Founded in 2001 and serving the greater Quinte area, the school has grown to be one of the largest in Ontario. It operates out of the CFB Trenton Yacht Club. Our goal is to be accessible, affordable and active. Through the use of technology, barriers are eliminated, providing the therapeutic benefits of sailing on one’s own. Whether you only wish to get out and enjoy the beauty and freedom found on the water or want the thrill of racing, Quinte SailAbility can teach you the skills needed to pilot a specially designed boat that can accommodate most people with disabilities. We use technology to modify the boat to meet your needs, including a sip and puff system that allows a quadriplegic to sail a Martin 16. Our training programs are designed for you as an individual and you progress at your own pace to the level you choose. Our programs are based on Sail Canada CANSail program conducted by Sail Canada certified instructors. Quinte SailAbility is operated by a Board of Directors consisting completely of volunteers. Additional volunteers assist each day at the school. You’re very welcome to come out and take a look. Try a test sail with no cost or obligation and find out just how free you’ll feel. |

ShelterBox Canada
Jul. 23, 2018 12:00 p.m.
We deliver the essentials people need to begin rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of a disaster. Each disaster is different, and so is every community. We don’t believe that one size fits all, so we make considered assessments to provide the exact support that gives people the hope and the power to transform their own lives. The aid we supply comes in the form of ShelterBoxes and ShelterKits. Our sturdy green ShelterBoxes contain family-sized tents specially designed to withstand the elements and provide people with temporary shelter until they are able to start the process of rebuilding a home. Our ShelterKits contain all of the essential tools people need to start repairing and rebuilding homes straight away. That’s not all. We know that a home is much more than bricks and mortar or tarpaulin and tent pegs. Our kits and boxes contain the items that help transform shelter into a home, like cooking sets, solar lights and activity sets for children. We test and evaluate all of the aid we provide by talking to, and learning from, the families who use it. This fuels us to be innovative and to continue evolving. |
