QuinteSailability, What's New

Quinte SailAbility is a sailing school for persons with a physical or developmental disability, regardless of age or degree of disability. Founded in 2001 and serving the greater Quinte area, the school has grown to be one of the largest in Ontario. It operates out of the CFB Trenton Yacht Club. Our goal is to be accessible, affordable and active. Through the use of technology, barriers are eliminated, providing the therapeutic benefits of sailing on one’s own.

Whether you only wish to get out and enjoy the beauty and freedom found on the water or want the thrill of racing, Quinte SailAbility can teach you the skills needed to pilot a specially designed boat that can accommodate most people with disabilities. We use technology to modify the boat to meet your needs, including a sip and puff system that allows a quadriplegic to sail a Martin 16.

Our training programs are designed for you as an individual and you progress at your own pace to the level you choose. Our programs are based on Sail Canada CANSail program conducted by Sail Canada certified instructors.

Quinte SailAbility is operated by a Board of Directors consisting completely of volunteers. Additional volunteers assist each day at the school.

You’re very welcome to come out and take a look. Try a test sail with no cost or obligation and find out just how free you’ll feel.

ShelterBox Canada

We deliver the essentials people need to begin rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of a disaster.

Each disaster is different, and so is every community. We don’t believe that one size fits all, so we make considered assessments to provide the exact support that gives people the hope and the power to transform their own lives.

The aid we supply comes in the form of ShelterBoxes and ShelterKits. Our sturdy green ShelterBoxes contain family-sized tents specially designed to withstand the elements and provide people with temporary shelter until they are able to start the process of rebuilding a home. Our ShelterKits contain all of the essential tools people need to start repairing and rebuilding homes straight away.

That’s not all. We know that a home is much more than bricks and mortar or tarpaulin and tent pegs. Our kits and boxes contain the items that help transform shelter into a home, like cooking sets, solar lights and activity sets for children.

We test and evaluate all of the aid we provide by talking to, and learning from, the families who use it. This fuels us to be innovative and to continue evolving.

CEO/Chief Librarian, City of Quinte West

Rita Turtle started her career as the children’s librarian at the Trenton Public Library in 1991 after completing her Master’s Degree in Library Sciences at the University of Toronto. She became acting CEO in 1996 as she led the library transition team through the amalgamation process to form the new Quinte West Public Library (QWPL) where she was appointed CEO.

Over the course of her career, Rita has overseen the implementation of two integrated library systems, worked on the design and building of two new libraries in Quinte West and successfully steered the evolution of the QWPL to meet the constantly changing needs of residents living in the digital age. She credits her talented staff with the continued success of the library.

“I am very proud of the library staff and am inspired every day by their commitment to excellent public service,” stated Turtle. “After all my years in this profession I can honestly say I loved my work and would recommend this career to anyone with an interest in information management.”
In the coming months, Turtle will continue her duties as CEO and will assist the QWPL board of directors during the recruitment and transition of the new CEO. Before her departure, Turtle will supervise the installation of a new RFID system at both library branches ensuring the library system is well placed to thrive in the coming years.

“The Quinte West library board would like to thank Rita Turtle for her outstanding leadership during her 20 years as CEO of the Quinte West library system,” stated QWPL board chairwoman Judy Vanleeuwen. “We are very fortunate to have had Rita as our CEO, and extend our congratulations and best wishes to her on her retirement.”
